the lesson of the Amorites

The country of FRANCE banned the above video (titled, "Dear Future Mom").  The video is a tender and indirect (but powerful) plea to pregnant women ~ especially to future mothers whose fetus has been determined to have Down Syndrome, not to abort their babies.  John Haller, when reporting on France's action to ban that video, said (here, at time marker 27:35):
"It's official: France has lost its soul.  France, as a culture, is the epitome of Romans chapter one: they have lost the ability to reason; they've lost the ability to love.  They are...I think it's over; I think it's over for France.  But don't take too much comfort in that ~ other countries, because, we've been on this path for over forty years; and this is where it ends."
A couple of days ago, before I saw Haller's video, I was thinking about the Amorites, whose story appears in the Old Testament ~ first, in the book of Genesis and, later, in the books of Deuteronomy and Joshua.  The patriarch Abraham dwelt for a while in Amorite territory in the land of Canaan.  Scripture tells us that certain of the Amorites were "confederate" with Abraham in the battle to recapture Lot.  Abraham was not the only godly man then living in the land of Canaan, which was home to the Amorites and other people-groups.  But the city of Salem (present day Jeru-salem?) ~ in the time of Abraham and not far from where he lived, had a godly king named Melchizedek, whose name the Bible says meant "king of righteousness" and "king of peace" (Hebrews 7:1,2).  Moreover, Abraham eventually fathered and taught a large household which included many servants ~ of which there were numbered 318 "trained" servants who were "born in his [Abraham's] own house" (Genesis 14:14) who fought with Abram in the battle for Lot (before Isaac was born).

Thus the land of the Amorites was greatly blessed and powerfully influenced by the presence both of a godly king (Melchizedek) as well as by the presence of a godly and very wealthy tribal leader (Abraham), who lived in the midst of the Amorites.

Time passed.  Abraham and Melchidezek died.  Five-hundred years or so after the time of Abraham, a man named Moses ~ and after him, Joshua, together with a vast number of Abraham's descendants (who then were called Israelites), entered upon a military campaign to conquer the land of Canaan, by the leading and help of the LORD.  In that campaign Moses (and, later, Joshua) was commanded by the LORD to show mercy to those nations "far off" which would submit themselves to the Israelites.  Concerning the inhabitants of the land of Canaan, however, God commanded Moses thus:
"But of the cities of these people, which the LORD thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt  save alive nothing that breatheth: but thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee: that they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so should ye sin against the LORD your God." (Deuteronomy 20:16-18).
God decreed the total annihilation of the Amorites ~ including their children.  (This is one of the reasons why so many unbelievers reject the Bible: because, they fail to discern and understand why God commanded the TOTAL destruction of certain people-groups.)  But why did God command Moses and Joshua to "save alive nothing that breatheth?"  It was because that the Amorites had utterly corrupted themselves and their own children, by their abominable beliefs and practices.

John Haller said that "France, as a culture, is the epitome of Romans chapter one."  What does that mean?  Here is the text Haller refers to:
"For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.  For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.  Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.  Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
"For this cause God gave them up  unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: and likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.  And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge,  God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them."  (Romans 1:18-32)
"God gave them up...."  "God gave them over to a reprobate mind...."  God does give up on some people ~ that is, those who persist to reject Him.  What happens to those, whom God gives up on trying to reach them with His truth and His mercy?  Haller puts it very succinctly, when he says that "God morons" [makes imbeciles of] those who reject the Word of God.  One of my dear Christian friends says it this way: "Sin makes people stupid."  Same thing.  And, Oh! what a dangerous, deadly thing it is for those souls which God gives up trying to win them over to Himself.

"I think it's over for France," Haller concluded.  And America is on the very same path that France traveled on the way to that culture's abrogation of all moral sensitivity; Haller so much as said.  They are modern-day Amorites ~ France and America, together with most of the rest of the world: they have utterly corrupted themselves by their abominable beliefs and practices; they have inculcated the same in their children; they have rejected and hated what godly influences that Christ mercifully placed in the midst of those erstwhile (formerly) Christian nations (so-called Western Civilization); they are spiritually dead.  The Abrahams and the Melchidezeks (the D.L. Moodys and Billy Sundays and, more recently, the Leonard Ravenhills and David Wilkersons) are long gone from Western culture.  Their descendants too have departed (as Abraham's descendants did depart) because of the great famine; only, in this case, the famine is "not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD" (Amos 8:11).

And I can hear the thunderous sound of a mighty army rapidly approaching from heaven, with Joshua's namesake ("Jesus" Christ) leading the charge toward planet earth....

The soon-coming Tribulation signifies the final conquest of this, the Promised Land, and the utter destruction of the Amorites ~ where so ever they may be.
